The Destinators on The Twinkle Brothers

collect on:

With debut single “Coming Home,” reggae-dub group The Destinators offer a slice of solace in a time of sorrow. The Charleston-based band comprises six local musical powerhouses who came together around the joy of collaboration just one year ago. While playing around South Carolina over the past twelve months, they compiled enough material for a full length album—the beginnings of which they teased last Friday with their first track, “Coming Home.”

Like any good reggae song, “Coming Home” is easy on both the ears and the mind. A staccato, drum-heavy beat is punctuated by chimes, maracas, and onomatopoeia, creating a serendipitous soundscape you can’t help but get lost in. Vocalists Layton Meacham and Liam Farrell are relaxed yet soulful, finding moments of ease and strain in every verse. Their lyrics uplift but don’t distract, finding a middle ground between realism and escapism. We're very excited to premiere the track on our SoundCloud:

For his Algorhythm, vocalist, guitarist, and sound mixer Liam Farrell gives thanks to his band’s music-only group chat and the track shared there that continues to shed light on moments of darkness.

Our band is constantly sharing tracks we love, daily. We even have a separate group chat that is designated specifically to sharing Dub, Reggae, and Roots music in all its forms. Live sets, full albums, single tracks. It's always fun and keeps ourselves inspired with the sound we love so deeply. One band in particular that comes up often is The Twinkle Brothers. Looking back to February, Layton [Meacham] had just moved to Charleston and joined our band. I was going through a pretty rough moment in my life at the time. One night we were just playing some tunes and he put on one of the most powerful songs I've heard. It is called, "Faith Can Move Mountains."

This version has both the clean mix and the Jah Shaka dub version, which takes the tune to a whole new level.  I hadn't known it at the time, but Layton was in a tough spot as well and it brought a lot of solace to us both. We both still get on a high vibe when we play this track. Something about that song provided a special, strong space. Kind of a clearing. It is such simple, yet powerful music that brings you back to reality and even times into another world. It's beautiful and we always give thanks for the inspiration that these kinds of tunes bring. After listening to that song we went on to listen to their set at JSMF. A must listen.

Hear The Destinators live at one of their upcoming shows this October and stay tuned for more new music later this year. And check out our full Algorhythms playlist here.
